Scanning software to help address cyberbullying

A powerful new online tool may help administrators at one Indianapolis school help spot cyberbullying — and possibly head off potentially violent aftereffects.
The Social Net Watcher program, introduced Monday at Shortridge Magnet High School, scans social media sites used by students, such as Facebook or Twitter, for a handful of potentially dangerous words. If words such as “kill” or “torment” are tracked, school officials are immediately alerted by text message to the possible danger.
The program is one of two major efforts going on in Indianapolis this week to help address the problem of cyberbullying.

Social Media Implicated in Bullying Report

There were 13 alleged and four confirmed incidents of bullying in the first half of the 2012-13 school year in Collingswood, and according to Superintendent Scott Oswald, social media is a big part of the overall problem.
“Our biggest challenge is and probably will remain the social media stuff that happens outside of school grounds,” Oswald said at the Jan. 28 meeting of the Collingswood Board of Education.
“The initial contacts there almost never happen in school.”
Of the confirmed incidents noted in the Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying (HIB) report Oswald presented at the meeting, the one involving cyberbullying resulted in the stiffest punishment levied by the district: an external suspension and “alternate in-school instruction” for the offender.

Facebook joins cyber bully fight in Australia

FACEBOOK and the Victorian government have forged an Australia-first relationship that will today see 2000 secondary students take part in a cyberbullying exercise.
It comes after the Education Minister, Martin Dixon, met with Facebook’s Australian policy manager, Mia Garlick, in April to discuss a joint approach to cyber bullying.
But a Victorian expert has warned that cyber safety education needs to be more than a one-off presentation because some schools still ”don’t have a handle” on the issue.

A Queensland primary school principal is threatening to expel students aged under 13 who refuse to delete their Facebook accounts, in a bold bid to stamp out cyber bullying at her school.
The policy has been applauded by cyber safety experts who say schools are grappling to deal with a surge in problems caused when children use social media sites designed for adults.
