The latest update for Apple’s iOS is now out. So what’s new?
Well the first change is that this iOS version can update the iPad which will please most iPad users. This brings multitasking already possible on the iPhone and iPod touch to the iPad. This also enables folders on the iPad allowing more room for apps.
AirPrint is new and makes it easy to print directly from your iDevice. No additional software is needed and as the name implies there is no need for cables.
Another new function, AirPlay, lets you stream digital media wirelessly from your iDevice to your Apple TV and AirPlay-enabled speakers. I find this an interesting move, and will wait with interest to see how much this catches on.
Now free on any iPhone 4, iPad, or fourth-generation iPod touch running iOS 4.2, Find My iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch helps you locate your missing device and protect its data. You need to install it on both devices and then you can find your lost device on a map, display a message on its screen, remotely set a passcode lock, and initiate a remote wipe to delete your data. Once found you simply restore from your last backup. I wanted this app right from the start but could not bring myself to subscribe to MobileMe. So this is a great move.
Other changes include:
- More social gaming
- TV show rentals from iTunes
- A unified inbox, view messages by threads, and open attachments in third-party apps.
- Find text on webpages in Safari
- Fonts in notes
- Reply to calendar invitations
- Keyboard and dictionary enhancements
- Improved voiceover and braille
- Set different tones for who is texting you
- Improved enterprise support.
